Hampta Pass Trek

Cross the Himalayas from Kullu Valley to Lahaul with Kardar Trails

πŸ₯Ύ Some Journeys Test Your Limits. Others Change Your Perspective.

There are trails that take you through forests. There are trails that lead to beautiful viewpoints. And then there are trails like Hampta Passβ€”where every step reveals a completely new world.

One day you’re walking through lush green valleys filled with wildflowers and flowing streams. The next, you’re crossing snowfields, climbing to a mountain pass above 4,200 metres, and descending into the dramatic cold desert landscapes of Lahaul.

Welcome to the Hampta Pass Trek, one of India’s most spectacular crossover treks and one of the finest Himalayan adventures for both first-time trekkers and experienced mountain enthusiasts.

Unlike many Himalayan treks that explore only one valley, Hampta Pass connects two completely different worlds. On one side lies the green beauty of Kullu Valley. On the other stands the rugged high-altitude desert of Lahaul. This dramatic contrast makes Hampta Pass one of the most rewarding trekking experiences in the Himalayas.

At Kardar Trails, we don’t simply organize treksβ€”we create carefully planned mountain expeditions that combine safety, experienced trek leaders, comfortable camping, local hospitality, and unforgettable Himalayan experiences.

πŸ“ Trek Overview

The Hampta Pass Trek begins near Manali and gradually climbs through dense forests, alpine meadows, glacial rivers, and rocky mountain landscapes before reaching the spectacular Hampta Pass at approximately 4,270 metres / 14,010 feet.

After crossing the pass, trekkers descend into the breathtaking landscapes of Lahaul Valley, where towering mountains, barren terrain, and glacial streams create an entirely different Himalayan experience.

During the trekking season, many expeditions also include an excursion to the iconic Chandratal Lake, one of the most beautiful high-altitude lakes in India, depending on road and weather conditions.

❀️ Why Trek Hampta Pass?

Hampta Pass is much more than reaching the summit. It’s about witnessing the Himalayas transform before your eyes.

  • Walk beside crystal-clear rivers.
  • Camp beneath millions of stars.
  • Cross mountain streams.
  • Climb through alpine meadows.
  • Walk across seasonal snowfields.
  • Stand on a Himalayan pass where two completely different mountain worlds meet.

After completing the trek, board your expedition vehicle and prepare for an exciting off-road mountain drive through the breathtaking landscapes of Lahaul. If road and weather conditions permit, continue towards the spectacular Chandratal Lake, often known as the "Moon Lake." Located at high altitude, this stunning lake is famous for its crystal-clear turquoise waters surrounded by dramatic Himalayan peaks. Spend some peaceful time around the lake, take a leisurely walk along the designated areas, admire the breathtaking scenery, and capture unforgettable photographs. The tranquil atmosphere and spectacular mountain backdrop make Chandratal one of the most memorable highlights of the expedition. After exploring Chandratal, return to the campsite or accommodation and relax after an incredible day of trekking and mountain exploration.
